Did I mention I'm a winner?

I've been reading through my new book The Vegetable Gardener's Bible.  I really want to try some of his idea's.  However it is going to have to dry up before I can get anything done.

Did you know that onions need to be in the ground by Valentine's Day.  You can read about that here.

I'm a WINNER!

I found this great veggie gardening site a few weeks ago. It's called Veggie Gardener. It has tons of info about plants, tools, recipes...you name it, you can probably find it there. So I registered for a contest on Veggie Gardener and what do you know, I won. I won the coolest book. It's called The Vegetable Gardener's BIBLE.  I think I all ready love it!  Here's a quote from the back of the book. "Already loved for its friendly advice, vegetable-specific information, and unwavering commitment to organic methods, America's best-selling vegetable-gardening book now covers more plants and offers smart new solutions for small-space and extended-season gardening."  I've been browsing though and can't wait to sink my teeth into the meat of the book.  Thank you Veggie Gardener!

Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds 2010 Seed Book

What a beautiful book. I have really enjoyed thumbing through the pages aand discovering new varieties. I can't wait to order.

However, my favorite part of the book is a quote in the striped tomato section.

"Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil and you're a thousand miles from the corn field." Dwight David Eisenhower

I love that!

Update on Potato planting

As you can see my friend has potatoes laying around on the ground. When we left the other day they were snug in their little hay bed. I suspect some little four legged creature came along and decided to more them. Maybe planting them in a bed of hay wasn't such a good idea.

Mine, however, are still buried in the dirt just waiting for warmer days.

Can you see the shallots? I didn't expect them to look so different from the onions. Of course, you have to look past the weeds.

We've had some rain and the garden really looks nice. Now I'm just waiting for a few more warm days to get some of my other seeds in the ground.

Potatoes in the ground. Right on time.

Yes I did get my potatoes in the ground on St. Patricks Day. It was a little overcast and windy.

I planted mine the way my grandfather planted his. My friend however, is trying a new method. We both dug a trench, hers a little than mine, and planted our potatoes eyes up. Then I covered mine up and that was that. My friend covered hers with straw. We then watered all the potatoes. Supposedly after about 6 inches of growth, my friend will put more hay on top. She will keep putting hay on top and will harvest her potatoes from the hay. She won't have to dig them, she will just reach into the hay and pull them off. We'll keep you advised.

Okay for some reason I can't add the picture. Keep checking back, I'll get it posted.
